I'm trying to access level 1 data from linux, it seems the easiest way would be to start IQConnect with the API on a windows machine and then connect to it at port 5009 from the linux machine. But so far IQConnect is refusing connection, can this be enabled?

No, due to exchange regulations against redistribution of data, IQConnect is restricted to allowing connections from the localhost.

You can run IQConnect on Wine under Linux. Works well for me, handles 500 symbols on one core of a dual-core 3.0G CPU with load averaging 5-15% and peaking at 25-40% during the fast market.

mvo,

out of curiousity, have you tried the beta version of IQFeed 4.6 yet? Have you noticed a decrease in CPU and increase in throughput?

Jay, no, not yet. I have only one account that I use for staging and reliability at this point is much more critical to me than a CPU load.

I don't think this security restriction works, nor is it necessary. It's easy enough to setup a tcp/ip tunnel to bypass this. Perhaps it makes sense to allow access from any remote server, but only one connection.

The security restriction works just fine. In addition, you have contracts with DTN and the exchanges that don't allow you to distribute the data from one machine to another without additional re-distribution agreements and fees. It doesn't make sense for us to provide access to a remote server because this isn't allowed under these agreements.
