I got an email about a DTN data center move and action required for outbound firewalls?
Is this spam? or is something happening?

This is a legitimate email. This is the information contained within the email.

To improve performance with long haul circuits, we are pleased to announce DTN is upgrading and relocating its data centers to Chicago, IL.  This will place our operations closer to the Chicago-based exchanges and to major communication trunklines for other exchanges.
While this will improve reliability and reduce latency it will also require a change of IP addressing for IQ Feed.  We expect the move to occur in the May-June 2021 time-frame and the transition is intended to be seamless. We are not anticipating outages associated with this move.
login.interquote.com will continue to be the IQFeed connection address but the underlying IP addresses will be transitioned to new values.  If client IT departments have made firewall rules to allow IQFeed operation, they will need to re-configure for the new IP address ranges.

Here is what you need to know to make the changes from the existing IP address ranges to the New ones.
Existing IQFeed IP Ranges (Primary):        66.112.156.x, Ports: 60000-60020, 60050
Existing IQFeed IP Ranges (Backup):         66.112.148.x, Ports: 60000-60020, 60050
New IQFeed IP Ranges (All):                12.36.218.128 – 12.36.218.254  (CIDR: 12.36.218.128/25), Ports: 60000-60060

Since the intention is to gradually transition data center operation, the new IP fire wall rules will need to be put in place in addition to the existing rules during the transition period.  This should be done as soon as possible.  Announcements will be made when the older fire wall rules can be removed.

Note that the above addresses are a range of possible addresses and not all are pingable addresses. You can use the IP address 12.36.218.206 for ping / traceroutes to the new data center.

This move will improve latency; the question is -- to what extent?

Try opening a Command Prompt and doing a tracert of the new DTN 12.36.218.128 IP site in Chicago. Your network partner twelve99.net has not changed. Who is responsible for your network routing table?

Data leaves Chicago to long haul circuits for customers from twelve99.net's chi-b23-link.ip.twelve99.net [62.115.186.22] router.

However, if you read the tracert timing from the bottom up there is some 25ms delay from the new DTN IP site [12.36.218.128] to the time the test data packet leaves twelve99.net's chi-b23-link.ip.twelve99.net [62.115.186.22] router.

I question, given the expense involved to transition to a new data center, why it takes so long (25ms) for the data to get going.

It's obvious that there is some serious long-haul travel going on during this covered 25ms. If this is for authentication or text packet assembly from DTN, and will these servers be moved to Chicago also?

Most importantly, is DTN senior management aware of these results? There's an entire cost/benefit calculation for the expenditure of some serious resources to position DTN for the long-term.

Will this 25ms time-out through the twelve99.net network be further reduced?

The server move is still ongoing, so I can't comment on details that specific about the connections. All I can say is that most customers should see reduced latency, and that DTN has done preliminary testing to confirm this.

What will be the new latency for users in NY?

Unfortunately we cannot provide you with a number at this time.

Once the move is complete you will be able to test latency by completing Ping tests and Trace Routing to our Server IP's.

Thank you for the question.

At this time the Data Center move has not been completed.

We appreciate your patience as we continue through the process of moving our data servers. We want be 100% ready when the move happens so that we do not interfere with our customers ability to receive data.

In the end we hope this process will be seamless and we will be posting a follow up forum post once we have completed the move.
